Reflective Writing

As a university student, I have to always be well prepared for my English. I grow up in a mandarin-speaking environment that resulting in my English ability is not as competitive as native students or the students from English background. My limitation of English has directly leads to an undesirable academic result. Thus improving my English is the top priority. There are four aspects I have to work on, which are speaking, listening, reading and writing.

In order to improve speaking and listening skills, I should have more conversation with fluent English speaker. I have to overcome the difficulties in the pronunciation and my ascent. I shall not to be afraid being laugh by the surrounding. Subsequently, by watching English news and drama, whenever there is a choice, is another ideal way to improve my speaking and listening skill. As time goes by, I will be more familiarised with their ascent from a fluent speaker.

My another weak point is writing, which includes vocabulary, grammar, sentence construction and logic thinking. These few points can be learnt through reading of books and newspapers, as they are the reliable sources of proper English. And then I will take down the tough vocabularies. My volume of vocabulary can be amplified through accumulating them. Moreover, the reading skill will be improved as well.

By completing ES1102 plus the above-mentioned method, hopefully my English standard can graduate to a higher level. Therefore, I can harvest a better grade in my academic result.

  1. The content wise is good. You demonstrated reflective connection and clearly present connections between your experience and your present. The main and supporting ideas are present as you talked about your past.
Organization wise is good too as you started out with a proper introduction paragraph and your body paragraphs are coherent throughout. You ended with a short conclusion leading back to your main point.
Language could further be improve through your grammar, vocabulary and fluency of your statements.

  2. The content was strong as your ideas were able to be delivered clearly with appropriate examples to support the ideas mentioned. I like how you organize your reflective writing as you clearly identified a problem, found the causes that result in these problems and lastly, back it up by using the appropriate action plans. This eventally fulfilled the aim of writing a reflective essay.
    Overall, the content is well-elaborated.
Lastly, sentences could be better structured, and grammar could be further improvised.

  4. Connie,
Content and organisation: Thank you for sharing your very honest evaluation of your weaknesses in learning English. Please do not afraid of speaking and making mistakes because you feel other people will laugh at you. You will find that many people have the same experience as you.
I certainly hope you will ask me many questions and explanations about things you don't understand in/out of class. You must ask me for help when in doubt, ok?
ES1102 primarily focuses on writing, so most of what we talk about in class focuses on academic writing skills. However, if you want help with other areas, you can ask me for help outside class. OR, you may go to the Writing and Communication Hub here at NUS (check it out at: http://www.nus.edu.sg/celc/writinghub/). The people at the Hub will help you in speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. You may wish to make an appointment to seek help.
Your work flows logically from past, present and future, and you described your experiences in a lot of depth==Very well done indeed.
    Language:
    1. Verb forms:

    -have + be/been?
As a university student, I have to always be well prepared for my English.

-has + past participle: what is the participle form of 'leads'
My limitation of English has directly leads to an undesirable academic result.

    2. Use of tenses: Be careful, you referred to an event and experience in the past.
I grow up in a mandarin-speaking environment that resulting in my English ability is not as competitive as native students or the students from English background.

    3. Do you know how a relative pronoun 'which' / 'that' should be used? Think about why 'which' is not necessary in this sentence.
There are four aspects I have to work on, which are speaking, listening, reading and writing.

    4. Use of singular/plural nouns:
In order to improve speaking and listening skills, I should have more conversation with fluent English speaker.

    5. Be careful: accent or ascent?
I have to overcome the difficulties in the pronunciation and my ascent.

    6. The sentence below is a passive voice sentence; therefore you need to use a participle on the verb 'laugh'. Please see me for further explanations if you don't understand the difference between active and passive voice sentences.
I shall not to be afraid + of+ being laugh by the surrounding. (Passive: topic of the sentence is at the end)
The surrounding laughs at me (Active: the topic of the sentence is at the beginning).

    7. My other / my another?
My another weak point is writing,

    1. 1. - Question: the verb form I used in the sentence was 'have to + be', not 'have been', so do I still need to change 'be' to 'been'?

      - My limitation of English has directly led to undesirable academic result.

      2. I grew up in a mandarin-speaking environment that resulting in my English ability is not as competitive as native students or the students from English background.

      3. If the sentence does not need the clause that the word in question is connecting, use 'which'. If it does, use 'that'.
'which' is not necessary in this sentence because 'speaking, listening, reading and writing' are the 'four aspects' I mentioned in the sentence earlier.

      4. - In order to improve speaking and listening skills, I should have more conversation with fluent English speakers.

      5. - I have to overcome the difficulties in the pronunciation and my accent.

      6. - I shall not to be afraid of being laughed by the surrounding.

      7. - My other weak point is writing
